Validation of biomarkers of response to medication.

Antipsychotic medications are the primary treatment for schizophrenia. However, almost half of patients do not respond adequately to these medications, and most individuals affected by the disease discontinue treatment due to severe side effects. Consequently, mental functions worsen, making patients permanently unable to live in society. Through this project, we intend to establish a commercially viable test that predicts the effectiveness of the response to antipsychotic treatment in patients with schizophrenia before treatment begins. The use of this test will allow for a better choice of medication at the start of treatment, leading to symptom improvement, reducing the period of debilitation that the disease usually imposes, and contributing to a reduction in the severity of the illness. The project investigates the possibility of offering an innovative solution to patients and their psychiatrists, allowing for a higher quality of life derived from successful prescriptions from the outset.
